Quarter-Life Crisis in Your 20s
· 5 min read

A quarter-life crisis is the unsettled, what-am-I-doing feeling that often arrives somewhere in your mid-to-late twenties. It is not an official diagnosis. It is a common label for a stretch where your life no longer matches what you expected.
What it can feel like
- Doubting your job, your degree or your city.
- Feeling stuck while others seem to move ahead.
- Wondering whether your relationships and friendships are the right ones.
- Feeling restless, flat or anxious without a clear reason.
- Asking big questions about who you are and what you want.
What age does it happen?
There is no set age. Many people describe it somewhere between 25 and 30, often after the structure of school fades and the first years of adult life settle into routine. For others it comes earlier or later.
Why it happens
Your twenties hold a lot of change at once: first jobs, money, moving, relationships. Add social media comparison and the pressure of choosing a direction, and it is not surprising that things sometimes feel shaky. It often means you have outgrown an old plan and have not built the next one yet.
Six calm things to do
- Name what is actually bothering you. Work, money, people or direction? One area is easier to work on than all of them.
- Do not make big irreversible decisions at the lowest point. Wait until you have rested and talked it through.
- Run a small experiment instead of a big change. Our guide to what to do with your life in your 20s shows how.
- Build a steady routine: sleep, movement and one thing each day that you finish.
- Talk to people. Many friends have felt the same and rarely say so.
- Cut down the comparison. Mute accounts that leave you worse off.
A note on when to get help
If low mood, anxiety or hopelessness lasts, gets worse or stops you from living your life, please talk to a doctor or a mental health professional. A guide like this, or an app, is not a substitute for that.
Your twenties are for trying, failing, and learning what fits.
A different way to see it
A crisis sounds like something going wrong. It may be closer to a checkpoint: you are asking questions you could not have asked earlier, and the discomfort is pointing at what matters to you. If feeling behind is part of it, read quotes for feeling behind in your 20s.
For the spinning thoughts that come with it, try how to stop overthinking in your 20s, or a few minutes of breathing exercises. In Life 20s you can pick topics like Growth and Patience and have quotes arrive where you will see them.
