How to Make Friends in Your 20s

Life 20s cover for the guide on how to make friends in your 20s

Nobody tells you that friendship gets harder after school. You no longer share a building, a schedule or free afternoons, and the friends you made by default drift as people move and change jobs. Making friends in your 20s takes a bit of intention, but it is very doable.

Why it feels harder now

Friendships usually grow from three things: repeated time together, a shared setting and a bit of openness. School handed you all three for free. Adult life does not. The fix is to rebuild those conditions on purpose.

Seven ways to meet people

  • Go to the same place regularly. A weekly class, run club, climbing gym or volunteer shift lets familiar faces turn into friends.
  • Join something with a recurring group, like a book club, a team or a hobby meetup. Recurring beats one-off events.
  • Say yes to invitations, even small ones. Many friendships start with a casual "want to come?"
  • Be the one to invite. Most people are waiting for someone else to suggest it.
  • Reconnect with an old friend with a short, easy message. "Saw this and thought of you" works.
  • Use work, but gently. Coworkers can become friends, especially outside the office.
  • Bring a friend to a friend. Introducing people widens everyone's circle.

How an acquaintance becomes a friend

The jump usually happens when you move from a shared setting to a one-on-one plan. If you enjoy talking to someone at class, suggest coffee after or a walk next week. Keep it low-pressure and specific: a day, a place, an hour.

Then keep going. One meet-up rarely makes a friend. Three to five, spread over a few weeks, often does. Small follow-ups matter: a message about something they mentioned, a photo from the day, a quick check-in.

If reaching out feels awkward

It usually does, and that is normal. A few things help: assume the other person would be glad to hear from you, keep the first plan short, and remember that being the person who reaches out is a kindness, not a risk. If you tend to replay conversations afterwards, our guide to how to stop overthinking in your 20s can help.

Be the friend you wish you had found sooner.

Quality, not quantity

You do not need a big group. A few people who know you well and who you can be honest with are enough. As your life changes, it is normal for some friendships to fade and others to deepen. That is not a failure on your part.

When you are feeling behind socially

Social media can make it look like everyone has a large circle. Most people are quietly looking for one more good friend. If you are comparing, try these quotes for feeling behind in your 20s.

Friendship is also one of the topics in Life 20s. Pick it and quotes about people, connection and showing up will arrive on your lock screen or in a widget, a small nudge to send that message.

A simple plan for this week

  • Send one message to someone you have not talked to in a while.
  • Invite one person to something small, like coffee or a walk.
  • Pick one recurring activity and put the first date in your calendar.
